Israel Cancer Association USA is about SUPPORTING...
1. WINNERS: ICA Cancer Research Scientists
With the fall of the Soviet Union, a great number of scientists and doctors immigrated to Israel. In addition, prominent researchers
and scientists from around the world have settled in the country to conduct advanced cancer research. Thus the brain trust coming
from the most respected leaders in the field are engaged at the highest level of cancer research. ICA cancer research scientists Dr.
Aaron Ciechanover and Dr. Avram Hershko were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (2004) for findings leading to therapies for cervical
cancer and cystic fibrosis.
2. COST- EFFECTIVE GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH
The cost of cancer research in Israel is a fraction of the cost for the same research conducted in the United States. Thus scientists
in Israel can go beyond standard practices and employ the most innovative research techniques while working according to strict professional
criteria. The result: ICA's world renowned and prize-winning researchers can access the most progressive advancements to find cancer cures.
ICA is also a major contributor to Israel's Cord Blood Stem Cell (CBSC) bank stored at the MDA Blood Services for future use in stem cell
transplantation.
3. FELLOWSHIPS: Your Stake in Research
Fellowships are the lifeline to the finest scientists in the world doing cutting-edge cancer research. ICA USA provides fellowships for
the most important cancer research projects conducted in Israel at a fraction of the cost of comparable research in the U.S. Thus an ICA
USA fellowship goes much further in coming closer to a cure. ICA receives hundreds of requests annually for financial support of cancer
research projects. They are presented to the ICA Scientific Research Committee for evaluation; approval of funding based on merit. As a
fellowship donor, you receive progress reports on the research project you funded and may meet the scientist in person in Israel.
4. LEADING THE CONQUEST: ICA Treatment Discoveries
Doctors and scientists funded by ICA USA have made major achievements with a global impact in the fight against cancer. Bone Marrow Transplants:
developed the science that allows bone marrow transplantations from non-compatible donors for treatment of leukemia and immune system malfunctions.
Breast Cancer Detection: discovered a non-invasive method of detection to distinguish between cancerous tumors and benign lumps. Cancer
Metastasis: discovered new chemical substances which may function as active drugs in preventing tumor spreading.
5. STRIKING RESULTS: Patient Quality of Life
ICA USA enriches the lives of cancer patients by supporting research and progressive technology. From affording medical equipment to early detection
programs, cancer patients are living longer with hope for cures. New oncology departments, hospice facilities, trained medical personnel, tutors
for schoolchildren with cancer, trips for these children and their families-- all this is made possible gratefully through ICA USA funding efforts.
